From opening for Hannah Montana’s Emily Osment, pop sensation Jesse Labelle returned to his home soil in Toronto 2 weeks ago to unleash his debut music video “Perfect Accident” live on MuchMusic’s “Much On Demand”. The video from Jesse’s “Perfect Accident EP” will debut on the MuchMusic countdown at #20 and has also been added into heavy rotation at Much More Music and Punch Much (Check out the tour video link below).

On tour, his heartfelt ballads and uptempo pop songs were met positively from audiences across the country. Opening for Emily Osment, Jesse had the opportunity to win over a legion of new young fans, witnessed by the long lines at the merch booth and his post show meet ‘n’ greets where literally thousands of (screaming) fans waited several hours for a chance to have a picture taken with the young singer songwriter.

Jesse Labelle’s “Perfect Accident EP” debut release, recorded with Dave Thomson (Lights) is already off to a running start hitting #1 on the Soundscan Singles Chart this past week. The digital version of the EP which came out in November soared into the Top 10 on iTunes Pop Album Chart the week it was released. This 4 song introduction is but a small taste of what is to come on Jesse’s full length release slated for a mid-March release on Wax Records.

Feature Tweeple Music Artist: Esmée Denters

July 18, 2009 at 1:50 am (Major Label, Tweeple Magazine articles by Jason Chu)

Esmee Outta Here

Esmee Outta Here

Lately, I been talking to face-to-face friends and my social media friends asking them if they know of Esmée Denters. A lot of them say no, but when I play or name drop the track “Outta Here”, almost all of then end up saying, “Oh yah, I’ve heard of her!” Making a name for yourself in the music business is becoming a trickier proposition as we live in this new age of pop music. Only fifteen years ago, record labels were kings, and the internet was still in it’s embryonic stages musically, so the music business was stable. Now with the dawn of social media sites most notably the powerhouses: Youtube, Myspace, itunes, downloading music, and a whole host of others have revolutionized the way music is shared as well as made (digital). Those music artists that can harness the powers of social media and tap into that elusive zeitgeist, will have the greater chance to succeed in today’s music business. And that’s why Esmée Denters is almost a perfect example of this success in today’s new wave of music artists.

How would I describe her to people who have no clue who she is?  I guess she reminds me with her star power and presence, of a more Hip Hop early Kylie Minogue (slightly international vibe), with the vocal chops as strong as Christina Aguillera, mixed in with an honest, humble, girl next door quality.

Well, Esmée Denters is most definitely a new and  fresh artist with an extremely high pedigree.  It all began on Youtube as a regular teenager, as she started a Youtube/musician channel like anyone else on August 25th, 2006 from  her home in the Netherlands. I’m sure she’s one of those kids who has been singing her whole life, since her vocal chops are spectacular even during her Youtube cover tune days. Not surprisingly, with her musical talents on display, her Youtube site exploded and went completely international, and as it stands today, it is #4 most subscribed all-time – musicians; #38 most subscribed all-time. So lets just say, she was beginning to get major attention when Mr. Justin Timberlake arrived and started to help her career.

Through her manager, Esmée got to meet Justin at one of his concerts, and she shortly was signed to his Tennman/Interscope Records. Later, Tennman announced that she would be opening 10 concerts for Justin Timberlake during his 2007 European tour. Esmée has the unofficial title of being the first unsigned singer to go from a Youtube channel, to perform commercially on a major stage. Props for that, however, credit goes out to JT for further developing her talents.

When the time came to work on her first album, she had the opportunity to work with some amazing  producers and writers: Ryan Tedder (of One Republic – and co wrote “Bleeding Love”), Stargate, Polow Da Don, and of course Justin Timberlake. These guys totally know what they’re doing in the music industry and how to maximize her talents.

Already she is becoming a superstar in Europe, Youtube, and is now coming over to North America with the backing and support of Justin Timberlake and his contacts. I think her chances of making it are quite high. By the way, did I forget that this young lady can really sing! She’s got crazy vocal pipes! I’ll put some links up of Esmée Denters single: “Outta Here” Official Youtube Premiere, as well her cover song of Justin Timberlake’s “What goes around” (JT is in the vid), and a video showing the “Making of Outta Here video”.

An open letter bio written Esmée Denters herself, and addressed to her fans:

Dear You!

Hi, my name is Esmée. I’m 20 and from wherever you are reading this, no matter how far away or what country you live in, we are now… connected. I live in a small country called the Netherlands in an even smaller town called Oosterbeek. Even the big town near me (Arnhem) only has about 30,000 people. My mom and I just moved to Oosterbeek so everything is pretty new.

Growing up, my dad was always playing music and it spoke to me and my sister. Even as little girls we would sing constantly. I fell so in love with singing that sometimes my own mother would go crazy from me singing too much! “Quiet, Esmée, please!” LOL! The truth is, from a very young age I never thought people would actually like my voice. I sang alone most of the time, in my room pretty much. Some of my friends said I had a good voice, but I never believed them. But recently, I saw a few people singing on youtube.com and I thought, maybe I’ll just try it. And I did….and I loved it!

I really connect with soulful artists who sing from their heart, so I started singing to karaoke tracks from Alicia Keys, Goo Goo Dolls, Destiny’s Child, Christina Aguilera and John Legend and some other songs and artists I look up to and…well…I just started singing them into my webcam and posting them! I had no idea anyone would even listen or watch me. Now everytime I post a new videoblog of me singing, people tune in! And yet, it’s still me in this little bedroom in Oosterbeek with my mom yelling for me to come down and eat something. Life is funny.

Since youtube and I started finding a life of our own together, lots of people have sent me really cool messages of support and record companies from around the world have been trying to get in contact with me. It feels like it’s happening as fast as I am typing this for you. But that’s why I love the internet so much—because anything can happen!

Big kiss and hugs from me.

Esmee Denters

Esmee Denters

Interview Questions for Esm ée Denters with Tweeple Magazine (06/25/09)

Interviewer: Jason Chu (Writer/Contributer), Karen Pentke (Contributer/Notes)

*In a conference call by phone, Esmée and I talked about a range of topics, from family, to Justin Timberlake, advice she’d give others, etc. Since it was a long distance phone call, we did not have a device to record the interview for playback later, so we (Karen and I) relied on memories of the call, and our notes.  After each question there are two sets of responses: the text that is bolded is from my paraphrased memory/writing, and the jot notes points belong to Karen’s handiwork. They always say two heads are better than one! Thanks so much Karen for all the help!

Jason Chu

Opener Questions

  • 1. How do you think you will deal with being on the road/away from your family for so long? On tour?

*Esmee: It will be difficult, miss family, but the people she’s with on tour is like family.

–          I will keep in touch via email/phone calls

–          It keeps me in control to stay in contact with them

  • 2. How do you not get so overwhelmed by all the attention/business that has changed your life with being a successful singer performer. How do stay grounded, and not let other things change who you are.

*Esmee: I’m the same person as I always have been

–          I’m excited about all of it

–          All the attention can get “weird”

–          “I’m just Esmee”

–          Family keeps me inline and grounded

–          Happy with everyone who is working with me, they work very hard.

  • 3. Once you were getting attention on Youtube, how did you get discovered by Justin Timberlake? Can you tell us that story

*Esmee: Lot’s of record companies/labels started calling me, and Justin too…he invited me to a concert, and I met him backstage, and played a song on the piano “How come U don’t call me anymore.” It was an old song I’d had done for years, and because there was a piano – it was a good song to do/play.

–          Youtube, I had record labels calling me, I thought it was like a joke at first.

–          Management then called me, I met with them and JT wanted to meet with me.  I went to JT’s Chicago concert, met him backstage, sang a song on piano.

–          1 month later I was signed!

–          I chose to play that Prince song b/c “It’s a great song!” and  I knew how to play it on piano

  • 4. How much a big brother mentor figure has Justin Timberlake been you since you started working together? It seems that he has had a very positive effect on your development as an artist. Tell me how Justin has helped you?

*Esmee: It’s funny because it’s almost exactly as you said. He has been a big brother to me, showing me things, about the music business.

–          Older brother figure to me

–          I look up to him, and aspire to be like him as an artist

–          I wrote a lot of my songs on my album, JT had input on my record as well

–          “What better person to learn from than Justin Timberlake?!”

–          JT tested me to see if I had what it took/handle to perform, he got me to perform with him even before my record was recorded

–          He wants the best for me

Does he push you or does he kinda know what you need in order to grow?

*Esmee: Yes, he challenges me like the first time I went on stage to perform in front of thousands. It forces me to rise to the challenge.

  • 5. It has been said, that you are the first Youtube artist to go from a Youtube channel directly to performing on a major stage (with Justin Timberlake). Seeing as you are a Youtube veteran, what advice could you give the thousands of teenage girls who look up to you from around the world, who are now trying to emulate what you did (film themselves singing cover tunes).

*Esmee: I have been around music my whole life, singing, playing, so I encourage them to keep at it, practice, if it what they want, to go after it, make videos, etc.

–          “Dare to put yourself out there, to do what you love, it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t happen the 1st time around…  it can happen in many ways”

–          i.e. Talent shows, YouTube etc.

Album related Questions

  • 6. Just wondering, I have been in a choir & have been around music my whole life. Your voice is amazing, it is a gift. So, I wondered did you have any musical training or played any instruments whiled growing up in the Netherlands

*Esmee: Actually only once did my parents sign me up for vocal lessons, but it didn’t work out. Now, that I’m signed and doing this as a career, I do have a vocal coach/teacher/instructor who is helping with my voice. His name is Dave Straut

–          Since I was a little girl I have always wanted to be a singer

–          It was too expensive for training lessons

–          I listened at home to many of my fav. Artists, from listening really

–          Now, after being signed I have a vocal trainer: Dave Straut

–          Helps to take care of my vocals – thank goodness

Esmee: I’m so thankful that in the years I was untrained I didn’t do any serious damage to my voice when singing.

  • 7. You said in your Making of the Outta Here video, that it was difficult to sing, what do mean by that musically?

*Esmee: It was just different than any kind of song I’m sung before, it was a different style, so I had to get used to it, practice it till I got it!

–          Song was challenging to sing at first,  more of a “Rock way” music

–          But eventually, listening to it now, I see that “I made it my own”

–          I said to myself – “I know I can do it now”

  • 8. It seems your tour is going across Europe this summer, when do you plan on coming over to North America?

*Esmee: Oh we will be coming to the U.S. and I would really like to come to Canada too! Canada is one of the first places to catch onto my music.

*Jason: We in Canada really like international music

*Esmee: We will definitely come over to U.S./North America on a tour before the end of 2009. No specific dates yet.

–          I am signed for North America, once after Euro tour over

–          I will be there before the end of 2009

–          I was in Toronto 4 months ago – I liked it a lot

–          Looking forward to going back to Canada – (T.O.) “It’s clean, nice and modern”.

  • 9. I quote from your writing on your Myspace page, –
Hi, my name is Esmée. I’m 20 and from wherever you are reading this, no matter how far away or what country you live in, we are now… connected. My question is…what do mean we are now connected. Does have anything to do with Twitter, Myspace, Youtube, Facebook, etc., etc.?

*Esmee: Yes that we are all connected now, it’s so easy to stay in contact, e-mail, youtube, I read my fans messages.

–          b/c internet everyone has access for ex. To my videos

–          I am here b/c of my fans – (fans) “They made it happen!”

–          Keep connected to my fan’s websites – they root for me – “I want to make them proud and do my very best.”

  • 10. When you sang Follow My Lead onstage with Justin Timberlake what was that experience like? Was the recording just a live recording or did you redo one in studio?

*Esmee: It was so amazing, sort of surreal because I’d never been on stage like that, seeing Justin interacting with other musicians/artists, and singing and dancing. I found it hard to believe that I was standing next to (people in her pictures).

–          JT did charity concert and invited me there (flew me over)

–          My 1st time performing on stage

–          To think all these famous people like 50 Cent, Liona Lewis – “

–          All these icons! It was great!”

–          It was Live recording

Closer/Finishing Interview Questions

  • 11. Who are favourite actors/celebrities?

*Esmee: Jaime Foxx – he is so funny and talented, etc.

–          Jamie Fox – my fav. Movie is Ray – he was amazing!

–          Like also that he is a singer and actor

  • 12. Do you plan release/make music & albums in your native Dutch language, as some others do?

*Esmee: I don’t yet, at this point in my career, I’m just excited to go out on tour and perform.

–          In the future – “Outta Here” has been recorded in Fin, or a foreign language

  • 13. What does Esmee Denters like to do in her free time, when she is not making mega selling music hit songs?

*Esmee: Same as everybody else, I like to hang out with my friends, go out to restaurants, watch movies, go shopping, make videos for my Youtube channel.

–          “Normal stuff”… like going to movies with friends, having dinner, shopping etc.

  • 14. What are you look forward to the most on your upcoming tour of Europe?

*Esmee: I can’t wait to just perform onstage. The opportunity to get up close to the fans, and see them. I appreciate them wanting to come see.

New Album Review: Ashley Tisdale’s “Guilty Pleasure”

July 17, 2009 at 5:22 pm (Major Label, Tweeple Magazine articles by Jason Chu) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Ashley Tisdale's "Guilty Pleasure" album

Yes I know that Ashley Tisdale is as mainstream as you can get for pop music, however, I always review music first and not popularity. Lest I remind you all, that I hardly listen to popular radio stations, and not for what you probably think. I just got bored with all the commercials and radio DJ’s incessant chatter. I never had a problem with popular/mainstream music itself.

But I digress, back to Ashley Tisdale’s upcoming sophomore album “Guilty Pleasure”. It will be released on Tuesday July 28th, 2009 to much fanfare. The nature of a celebrity of Ashley’s stature (@ashleytisdale), who has already exceeded over 1,000,000 twitter followers making her one of Twitter’s top accounts. This alone assures her a probable strong showing in sales. Also, the fact that her fans and followers are strongest in the teenager demographic, only helps her cause. She has built this strong fan following primarily over her role in the Disney T.V. show “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody”, her appearances in the “High School Musical” movies, and of course her music/debut album.

What’s also interesting with this 24 year old pop singer/actress, is that she attempting to doing a “double feature” with her upcoming projects. Not only is her album releasing July 28th, but her new 2oth Century Fox film, “Aliens in the Attic” opens Friday July 31st. Smart marketing and P.R. as she will get a ton of publicity in the next few weeks, that the majority of other musicians could only dream of.

Her corporate/music label advantages aside, the album’s not too shabby on own merits (in the summer fun way). First of all, I would definitely class her in the Avril Lavigne pop/rock genre with a few interesting tracks in varying music styles. The cool bit is that Ashley isn’t trying to pretend to be an “artiste/musician”, but is just having fun, making catchy pop tunes that her fans will dig. Her vocals are tinged with a sweetness, that is fun, and sufficiently strong. The backing band/musicians sounds decent, and don’t try to overplay, but hit all the catchy hooks with aplomb.

The lyrics are again light and geared straight to the heart of the topics all teens like to sing/hear about (i.e. rebellion, relationships, gossip, etc.). I guarantee her singles will play heavily on all radio playlists because her popularity and her music is so catchy (i.e. easy to remember/sing-a-long to). And that’s her point, as I think she knows her music is good enough to be a “guilty pleasure”. What I mean by this, is that her music will probably transcend age demographics on this album because she most definitely has the cross over appeal of an Avril, Miley Cyrus, and early Britney Spears. Ashley Tisdale has that wholesome “girl next door” quality that parents are  accepting to, however, let’s just hope she doesn’t go down the “Britney” sexual musical path (Ashley doesn’t need to, her popularity is already immense).

Her producers did a great job and the sound quality is top notch, however, a little too much treble/tinny (I prefer a strong rhythm/bass bottom end in the mix). I like the fact that she tried to mix up her album songs with tracks with a R&B flavor, Hip Hop, ballads, etc. Mixing it up definitely shows she’s isn’t afraid to try new things to grow and mature with her music.

In summary, a good effort, a fun album with catchy pop hooks, clean/sweet vocals from a rising star – and potential superstar in the music industry. Have a great summer Ashley, you’re report card was alright, it’s O.K!

Chimaira – “The Infection”

May 24, 2009 at 7:59 pm (Major Label, Music Reviews) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Name: Chimaira

Genre: Groove Metal/Metal Core/Nu Metal

Major/Indie/Unsigned: Major: Nuclear Blast (2006 – present) + Indie label: Ferret Music (2006 – present)

Albums: This Present Darkness (1998), Pass out of Existence (2001), The Impossibility of Reason (2003), Chimaira (2005), Resurrection (2007)

Album: The Infection

Released: April 2009

Overall Rating (out of 4): 3.5

Musicality – For the metal genre, they play amazingly tight musically as a band. The music can be described as visceral sonic madness….but under control.

Singing – “Growling” vocal style of Mark Hunter is fit, aggressive, and you can still surprisingly hear & understand  the lyrics (I find that unusual in most heavy bands).

Lyrics – I have to admit I looked at a website to take a full look at “The Infection” album’s lyrics on each song, and I came away impressed! The lyrics that were written are poetry, dark poetry, but poetry nonetheless (Talking about darkness, pain, suffering, and life’s trials). It is very good, and the lyrics themselves stand on their own. I would google Chimaira lyrics if you don’t believe me.

Flow/Rhythm – Insane metal rhythms, with the drums frenetic energy (Kick drum crazy!), they truly create something creative and powerfully high energy! The rhythm guitars are heavy and crunchy where they need to be, and subtle/quieter where that’s needed. As well, the melodic lead parts on guitar add complexity to each song. This is a band at the top of their game, they have matured, progressed, and taken their music to the next level!

Technicality/Recording – Amazing audio recording, able to mix all the different types of sound elements together into a cohesive whole.

Visuals – Myspace page is excellent with music, tour dates, you name it. Their Youtube channel takes a slightly different angle, as it is a more of a talk to the fans site. The band talks about what’s going on with the band, products and promotions (a nice way to see the band beyond the music). Their personal website is more of a blog style with pictures, tour dates, and everything else. Finally, they do a Twitter account to follow, which can link  at the top of this review. So, in my books they got things pretty well held down on the technologic side!

Top 2 Songs:

1. Frozen in Time (Crazy heavy rhythm guitars, insane pounding drums, relentless, powerful! Killer Chimaira breakdown rhythms)

2. The Disappearing Sun (Insane drum rhythms with crazy lead guitar riffs, nice into lead into the song, I like how the song doesn’t rush into the mega heavy parts – patience in a metal song?!)

Chrisette Michele – “Epiphany”

May 15, 2009 at 3:03 am (Major Label, Music Reviews) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Name:  Chrisette Michele

Genre: Soul/Jazz/Hip Hop

Major/Indie/unsigned: Major/Def Jam Recordings

Album: Epiphany

Released: 2009

Overall Rating (out of 4): 3

Musicality – An interesting mix of ballads, R&B numbers, and Jazzy pop confections makes the soft music you hear, quite enchanting.

Singing – I would compare her voice to a modern day Billie Holliday. Her voice is very sultry and has a maturity within the voice. Her voice is also very versatile, as she can crossover easily from Jazz, R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop.

Lyrics – Love, life, and everything in between. She sings every word convincingly.

Flow/Rhythm – Very chill, with a relaxed vibe.

Freshness – She is different and her mishmash of styles combined with her voice, make the music almost seem like fusion cooking (a blend of colors!)

Technicality/Recording – Excellent! Would you expect any less from Def Jam?

Visuals – Her Myspace page is excellent. The P.R. and marketing team sure know what they’re doing. A glam shot of the face of Chrisette Michele is probably the best way for her to develop major brand name recognition in the entertainment world.

Top 2 Songs:

1. Epiphany (Hybrid sound! Subtle hip hop beats with jazzy overlay, and then there’s her voice!)

2. Love is You (Just a beautiful song, sung wonderfully)
